Weekly Porch: Area Activities, August 22-September 1, 2019

Below is a list of upcoming activities in or around Benton Park West, a Cherokee Neighborhood.

Grand Opening of 2755 Chippewa

Friday, August 23 at 6-8 pm, 2744 Chippewa

After 3 years of predevelopment work and 2 years of extensive renovation, we're excited for the first major rehab in a wave of new equitable development projects along Chippewa, to come alive. We'll have pop-up shops by a few local businesses in the storefronts, a gallery of photos taken throughout the renovation, drinks by Saint Louis Hop Shop and snacks from our neighbors across the street at Gooseberries. Opening and Reception: Preserving the Holy

Saturday, August 24 at 7-9 pm, Flood Plain Gallery, 3151 Cherokee

Preserving the Holy, a solo pop-up exhibition by Maleeha Samera, St. Louis-based photographer, showcases a body of work on the sacred moments of a religious pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. The series highlights the intimacy and serenity that comes from a spiritually exhausting, yet fulfilling journey. The artist comes from a Muslim denomination that is highly persecuted and traveling to certain countries can be unsafe. Taking photographs made Samer more visible and, therefore, at risk. For this reason, each photo was taken with intention and without any room for hesitancy
